Tooth pain, or toothache, is a common issue for everyone, including children. There are a variety of causes but the treatment options are similar. If the toothache persists after over-the-counter remedies have been used or the pain continues for 24 to 36 hours, you should make an appointment for your child with their pediatric dentist.
Causes of Child Tooth Pain
If your child is fussing about brushing their teeth, they may have a toothache. If your toddler can’t speak yet and you notice their discomfort, check their mouth for the most common causes of the ache. These include:
- Chipped teeth/cracked enamel
- Cavities
- Inflammation of the gums
- Periodontitis (gum infection)
- Sinus pressure
- Food stuck between teeth
Food stuck between their teeth can usually be carefully removed with floss. The other potential causes of your child’s tooth pain should be addressed by your dentist. To help your child feel better in the time before their appointment, try these remedies.
Ways to Help Address Pain
Every child is different, and may have unique dietary or allergy needs. Keep this in mind as you consider these at-home remedies. Don’t use anything you think your child may have an allergy or sensitivity to.
The most important way to help your child is to provide care, patience, and love. Toothaches are difficult for even adults to handle, so your little one needs a gentle touch.
Saltwater Swish
This is one of the most common ways to relieve oral pain. Mix one teaspoon of table salt in an eight-ounce glass of lukewarm water. Have your child swish with this mixture whenever they feel pain. Salt is naturally antibacterial, so it helps kill the bacteria causing your child’s tooth pain.
Cold Compresses
Gently press a cold washcloth to the outside of the cheek where your child is experiencing pain. This can help reduce swelling and discomfort. You can also use a tea bag (peppermint is excellent for this) once it’s been steeped and cooled completely. Have your child hold the tea bag in between their tooth and cheek.
Age-Appropriate Medication
Child ibuprofen can help reduce swelling and pain. If your child is old enough, you can use these over-the-counter medications to help until they can get to the dentist.
Cloves
Cloves are a popular method for adults and can help with child tooth pain too if used carefully. The active ingredient in cloves that helps with pain, eugenol, can be dangerous if used in too high of a concentration. Place just a few drops of clove oil on a cotton ball and have your child keep it in place for no longer than a few minutes. Never use whole or ground cloves.
